A friend of mine is really into wine and saw a similar project online. He asked me if we should make it, and I said “yup”. This is actually one of the more successful projects, so it’s a shame I didn’t document it better.
The wood is teak, and we used brad nails to secure the miter joints during the glue up. The corks were glued whole to 3 mm MDF with polyurethane, which requires some moist so we damped both corks and MDF. I think we cut a rabbet in the teak for the MDF to rest on, propably a little wider than on the picture.
At one end we must have been unsatisfied with the distance between the corks and the wood, because we glued in a strip.
We didn’t apply a finish as my friend liked the raw look of the wood. Polyurethane bubbles up and fills cavities which adds to its effectiveness, but next time I will be less generous with the glue and maybe use a yellow one. But all in all both of us were very satisfied and happy with the result.
